so this morning i read through our local newspaper and see the headlines on the sports section ‘Like Going to church‘…an article from the associated press…this obviously caught my eye so i read the article…wow…it was an article about the Masters which started today…about golf and the tradition…no joke!
there was a man interviewed in the article who said that he was there because he had taken his wife there for her 60th birthday!!! now, my wife likes golf…she actually very good at it…but NEVER would i think of visiting a golf tournament for her birthday present!!!
but it didn’t stop there, the guy was talking about how beautiful and amazing the course was and the tournament itself…how he was taking all kinds of pictures…and then came the statement…”it’s like going to church”.
wow, there were soooooooo many things that were coming to mind…church is a recreational event for the social elite…church is something that only the professionals participate in, if they’ve done everything to qualify…church is only to be attended on special occasions, like your birthday…church is what is worshiped instead of God…church is a competition where the best that week is crowned…church is all about tradition…or maybe church is a fair weather thing, even seasonal(they had a fog delay this morning)…DOES THIS GUY GO TO A CHURCHPLANT THAT MEETS AT A GOLF COURSE, now there’s an idea!!!
i don’t have any idea what this gentleman meant by his statement…there wasn’t a whole lot to work with in the article…so i can’t agree with, nor criticize, what he was saying, but it did cause me to think and question…
what is church to me…what can it be compared to in life…can it be compared to anything…why do i go???
i pray that it never becomes a social club or something that i worship…i pray that it never becomes a competition…i pray that it is a place for me to serve God and do His work…i pray that it is a place for me to use the gifts and talents that God has given me, for His honor and His glory…i pray that it is a place for me to learn, grow, and be challenged…
i might even pray for that churchplant on a golf course thing?!?!
