“ideal candidate”…continued

so i started to share about how God can use people that aren’t the most qualified or best suited in man’s eyes. the second person that came to mind is when i was studying this, was david.

the first time i see this is when david is anointed king in I Samuel 16. samuel comes to anoint one of jesse’s sons. david wasn’t even invited to the party, they had to go out and get him from the field when samuel was not able to anoint any of his brothers. and when jesse referred to him he called him, “the youngest”. he didn’t even call david by name. i’m sure he was feeling real confident at this point.

then just one chapter later in I Samuel 17 there is this guy taunting the nation of israel named goliath. he’s a big dude and everyone is scared, including king saul. david comes on to the scene and doesn’t seem to be scared at all. but first his brothers try to deter him and later the king. david is just a boy and goliath is this great giant.

what no one was considering was the power that david held, due to God working through him. he was focused on what God had for him to do and confident in the God he was fighting for. he said, “you come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. but i come to you in the name of the Lord of hoses, the God of the armies of israel, whom you have defied. this day the Lord will deliver you into my hand…” (I Sam. 17:45, NKJV)

if the Lord has called me or you or anyone else to do something we don’t have to be the ideal candidate. but we do need to stay focused on the One who has called us. we need to stay focused on what He has called us to do. and we need to trust Him for the strength to get us through whatever it is He has for us to do. don’t underestimate what God is capable of doing.

i’ll finish with this short statement i heard. this week i was learning about the 1st great awakening in class. two of the men that God used had some weaknesses. one was cross-eyed yet was a very powerful speaker both here in america and over in england. and another was near sighted and had to read his sermons as he held the notes close to his face. yet his church had a revival that lasted two years. the professor put it this way…”God can make some straight licks with some crooked sticks.”
